Lottery grant turns back the clock at the Cater Museum
The Cater Museum announces a Heritage Lottery Fund
Grant of £41,000.
This grant will enable museum staff and governors to literally
turn back the clock for this well-loved 18th century building by
returning the rear façade to its historic appearance and enhancing
the period garden for visitors, especially the disabled. All twentieth
century concrete rendering will be replaced by materials the original
builders would have utilised.
This Grade II listed building provides a popular focal point for
Billericay residents and reminds visitors of a heritage stretching
back over 2 millennium.
Chairman of Governors, Bill Amos, comments:
“We are delighted to receive this award. The Cater Museum is a ‘gem’
in the centre of Billericay and we hope that the new development
will enable greater access and enjoyment for all members of the
community.”
HLF Regional Manager, Robyn Llewellyn, said, ’We are thrilled to
help restore this historic building and open it up for the community.
As well as conserving an important heritage asset in Billericay,
the project will give the public wider access to the museum both
physically and through improved display and interpretation”.
