A needlework picture in silk, with silver threads, has recently been taken for professional conservation work. This work is possible because of the generous donations from the people of Billericay and with a grant of £200 from the Essex County Museum Service.
The picture, “Juno, Queen of the Heavens”, was worked by Mary Ann Bennet. She was but 10 years old when the picture was sewn in 1794!
This marvellous picture was a gift to the Museum from a descendent of Mary Ann Bennet, Mrs. Fenton of Billericay.

Leisure Display (photographic/magic lantern) - The museum includes in its displays the ways in which our forefathers amused themselves before the electronic age. Seen here are magic lantern slides, an 18th century tobacco holder, stereoscopic pictures, early playing cards, and lots more!

The Cater Museum houses many artifacts of Billericay and contains a lot of local information.
The 18th to 19th century red brick building is tiled and has dormer windows, one of which depicts the war time practice of applying tape to reduce flying glass. The centre window of the first floor is bricked up - this is a reminder of the window tax. Within the three floor building you will find a mid Victorian parlour, bedroom and kitchen, as well as a World War II exhibition.

A Roman sestertius of copper alloy from the reign of Severus Alexander (AD 222-235). The coin was minted in Rome in AD 227.

Unpopular with his troops, he was murdered by them in AD 235!

Popular toys in the Victorian period included lead figures. During the age of empire, these were often soldiers or figures from the far corners of the world.

Tin plate toys, many with movable parts, included trains and railway pieces. You may even remember playing with some of the games like our early version of "Snakes and Ladders" of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey"!
